Anyone recommend a spot to take kids for their first time fishing? I have a friend whose kid would like to go. He's only 10, so I'm looking for a lake/pond in the New Haven area. I don't own a boat, and would rather keep his first time on the shore(less distracting).
Thanks! |

I don't know any places in particular, but I'd let the kid have fun with some live bait. Garden worms, wax worms, meal worms, or mummies would all do well. Bait attracts a variety of fish and minimizes the amount of casts (and thus, potential tangle ups). You don't have to go to a big name lake either, there are probably some smaller ponds in the area. If all else fails, you can try some of the state parks. Wharton Brook park is near the New Haven area, although I've never been there personally, I want to check it out in the near future myself. |

can't beat the trout parks for kids...usually lots of sunfish, perch and the occasional bass among the frequently stocked trout.
my wife just started fishing last year and those trout parks got her into it.
the link below is a list of trout parks across the state.

Well if you want to give the kid a start to fishing, blues are in down there as well as the weakfish, the blues are tailing on the shore there, so you can site fish them. The blues aren't to big, so I don't think anything the little guy cant handle, but if not i would agree with using live bait at the trout parks, lot of fun for kids. |
