Saturday night I stayed up to hit the morning incoming and high at Seaside. Arrived at the spot around first like. Low tide was 4:54am followed by 10:59 high and 5:21 low. Tides were astronomical and strong to go with big waves due to a strong 10 to 20 mph east and southeast wind.
As the morning went on and tide was already high, nobody got into anything. We'd see an occasional school of blues and/or albies start busting for less than a minute before leaving. There would occasionally be a huge splash as if it was a large striper cruising around. I was telling other buddies that the bite wasn't gonna turn on til the last 2 hours of outgoing and then continue on through the evening.
By 2:30pm I was the only one there. As I followed the tide out is when things started getting active. Stripers were the ones blitzing on the last 2.5 hours of outgoing. Had a large school right in front of me that trapped peanut bunker in a large hole. Landed 5 with 1 being a 29" keeper. All came on a Rapala XRap Walk while pencil popping with it.
Once the tide started turning is when the stripers turned off and bluefish turned on. Landed 3 tailors 4 to 6 pounds.
Fish were being finicky this time. No matter what I threw, it was on and off. They'd be blitzing right in front of me and I'd get a number of explosions and hook into 1 to 3 fish before they stopped hitting and later started again.
First keeper striper since June. |
