Hey trout fans,
My buddy and I decided to get some trout fishing in on Saturday morning.
We headed up to the Farmington River at Satan's Kingdom.
We got there at about 6am and it was still dark. While we were putting our waders on it started to rain. The wind was blowing pretty strong and you could hear it howl in the trees. My buddy said " man it sounds like the river is moving hard and fast.. I said no.. it's just the wind in the trees. Well I was a dumbass. He was right.
We walked down to the bridge area and the water was definitely moving way too fast to try and wade. We decided to try and fish from the bank a pool that I have had success with in the past. (Pool x.. Just kidding..The pool near the bridge)
It was very difficult since the water was so high. After about 20 minutes of not getting any bites we decided to head north. We fished an area near "the wall". Again the water was high and moving fast, but we were able to wade it. I had just purchased a wading stick, and I was so glad to have it. It saved my ass from falling numerous times. I suggest everyone get one if you wade strong water.
So on to the fishing:
I tried using meal worms, but the water was too fast and kept ripping them off my barbless hooks. So I switch to trout worms. I worked a hole for about an hour with no hits. My buddy caught two 9 inch browns in an area where the riffle and slack water met. He was using trout worms also.
I moved to a different spot and finally hooked into my first of three fish. All three fish were caught on trout worms on a size 8 Eagle Laser red hook. I used two pea size split shots to just about be able to bounce the bait off the bottoms.
The best brown was about 13 inches. All of the fish caught seemed to be freshly stocked trout.
The Farmington is running strong and hard. Be safe!
No fish porn cause the fish were too small to take the camera out and risk dropping it. _________________ I'd rather be fishing, than sitting here in front of this computer,,,

Thanks for the report RobO. I'm not a trout fisherman, but I live about 20 minutes away from Satan's Kingdom, so it was nice to read about what the Farmington River is like on that stretch. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Cleats and carbide screws should be in them boots. I never use a wading stick cause i make sure my feet dont move. RobO make sure you invest in some really good ones for upstate NY.i change my carbide screws every 2 days i fish up there. But i scout alot of water to take people out. dad will change his every 3 or 4 weekends.... LOL.. they all follow my reports so them old asses dont have to do what i do. I dont mind tho rivers, stream, and creeks change alot every flood... |

I know what you mean about the rivers changing a lot from every flood. The bottom contour of Bantam River is different from the way it was before the recent high, fast water. The water was exceptionally clear when Daryl and I were there. Parts of the bottom look like they were scoured clean.

Hey AF!
You have to try the Colebrook river above the Res.
Went by there today and the Browns are horning their backs out of the water
Trout beads or Salmon eggs should work well!!!!

Hi AF!
NO -> Just past the main Res. over the state lines.
Go to the Colebrook Res. boat ramp parking lot -> then go thru the north gate and run the road along the Res. till you see where it narrows and the river runs into it. Look for the big stone abuttment that sticks into the river.
The gravel bed north of that is where the Browns are running to spawn!
