Tried to escape the wind today and go to the sheltered area at the enfield dam. To my surprise, we did very well.
As soon as we got there we saw the sturgeon, a common occurance. He/she was about 3ft long. Unfortunately we couldn't get a pic.
On the second cast, the little one got a 1lb smallmouth. We were VERY surprised, as this was the very first smallmouth we have ever seen here.
I got a runt smallmouth and a good sized perch. Saw the sturgeon again swimming against the brick wall, really cool to see.
The little one got another smallmouth, this one was a little over a pound, a pretty good fight.
We were using small senkos, but does anyone know anything that works really good here? Now that I know they are there, I'd like to target them a bit more, but I dont have much of a clue about catching smallmouth.

Steve, try grubs on 1/8th oz leadhead, small inline spinners like the Blue Fox and throw the small senkos on a shakey head jig. |

also cannot go wrong with a small watermelon or green pumpkin tubes or a green pumpkin or watermelon spider grub. You can get some arkie grubs at wal mart for a good price and they work well too. good luck..i have only seen one strugeon on the river and it looked to be dying. It was in the hartford area about 7 years ago and was pretty small too..may have to go up and ck it out. _________________ I love rippin on the river!

|
|
I was looking to catch some good size stripers in the CT river this weekend, i have never fished the spring striper and i was wondering if anyone had some good spots to fish off shore where i could get some good size fish.
I'm looking to fish really wherever the fish are big and plentiful. I was thinking of using a pencil popper but not quite sure, so people just give me all the advice you can.
Thanks! |

Thanks for the advice markO and Johnny, I'll have to try out some of those tactics
Dysonp, I have seen lots of stripers at the enfield dam, both caught by fisherman and jumping out of the water. You can climb down the fence and walk across the rock ramp to the pad and cast out in various places, and you have a good chance of getting a hookup. Also, be EXTREMELY careful when going across the ramp to the pad, because if you slip and fall into the whirlpool, we might not see you again . Good Luck! _________________ Catch and release only.

Hmmm, I have never been there but I think I am going to go check it out since it appears to only be a few miles away. Couple ?s, is jumping the fence frowned upon? And what side of the river do I access the dam from, 159/190 side or the RT5 side.

i live about 2 min from the dam, it is on the 159 side in Suffield. iv only been there once this year and we fished down the canal a bit, not off the dam. we caught a few little rock bass and a couple smallies. Saw the sturgeon a couple times there also. There has been a few of them in there for a couple years now. Seen some around 2-3 ft and one about 5ft. Awsome looking fish. And as for fishing down in the river for stripers iv seen many people doing it, some climb over the fence and some just walk down from the bike trail. iv seen some pretty big stripers being pulled out there. When i was about 13-14 i saw the biggest salmon iv ever seen pulled out of there also. had to be 20+ lbs. The guy that caught it kept it too, ran right to his car and left.

no prob DV, if youre coming down 159 from windsor/windsor locks its the last street on your right before the enfield (190) bridge, called canal road. just go down there to the dirt parking lot and there ya go. good luck!

when i see people doing it its usually when the river is kinda low, iv never been down and done it myself but when i was there last week the water looked a little high and seemed to be moving at a pretty good clip. if you wanted to try it still i would really be careful

well i will check it out when i get there, most likely avoid it. are there still good places to fish on shore around the dam without having to walk across the rock ramp? |

down in east windsor on South Waters street(first street on the right after you go over the 140 bridge from windsor locks) under the rt91 bridge, iv heard of some keepers being pulled out of there. theres some nice sandy banks people make fires on and fish from. i see them pretty much every time iv gone out on my buddys boat this year. iv never really fished in the river near the enfield dam though. but over on the enfield side near the thomsonville boat launch iv seen people fishing from shore there |
