Today I caught a Skate. I never caught one before, nor have I seen one in person around here. I heard they're pretty rare in CT. Has anyone else caught them in CT?

When I was young (20ish years ago) and fishing with my dad, he caught one once. Not sure if it was the same species, but it was some kind of ray. Pretty cool. Nice catch on a super-rare fish.
My dad has told me that back in the 60s when he would fish with his father they used to catch puffer fish in the sound. Never saw one of those first hand though. |

I saw a puffer fish caught last summer at the same spot I caught the skate. |

Skates are pretty common around here. If you are bottom fishing, they tend to show up. I've caught about 10 or so of them this year. They tend to come up when me and my buddies are going for other stuff of course. All in the Niantic Bay area and out around Millstone. _________________ Steve |

I went out on a boat for a school field trip a few times and we used drag nets to catch fish, crabs, ect. And every time we went out we caught loads of skate. So i wouldn't say that they are rare |

Unfortunately skates are all too common in Ct. waters. Anyone who fishes for fluke , flats and any bottom fish catch too many of them. |

On the upside, they are supposed to make great shark bait. It’s a very popular bait down south for land based shark fishing. _________________ PB's:

Skates make awesome bait strips. Use them all the time down in the Carolinas. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.
